Trouble in this world is just too easy to come by. I recognized this at the ripe age of twelve, when I was rushed into the ER with a fractured growth plate.
The truth is, my ankle wasn’t the only thing that cracked that day.
I had went roller skating with my family with the sole purpose of having fun. This was one of the first and LAST times we ever went out for roller skating. I remember skating to the center of the floor to help my sister get up from the floor, and with a loud CRACK, I fell to the floor.
But you want to know what the most interesting part was? I didn’t know there was something terrible wrong with my ankle until I tried to stand up. Then the pain began to shoot through my whole leg and I fell with an audible gasp back onto the ice rink.
I retell this painful story because it often reminds me of young boys and girls who don’t realize how attached to sin and temptation until they try to separate themselves from it. That’s when the thoughts will begin to encircle your mind, trying to tell you that all you will ever be is chained to your sin. If you let the thoughts stay, they begin to manifest and you become everything you feared – a slave to your sin.
I’ve been fasting social media since the beginning of January, and God has really opened my mind about how tied to my phone I really was. Since getting rid of all my accounts, I’ve read the Bible more, I’ve been more productive, and my self esteem has gone up. I think to myself, wow! I’m getting so much closer to God!
But the temptation still hits.
And when it hits, it hits hard. This week, I’ve found myself staring at my blank phone for minutes on end, debating whether to re download a social media app.
“Just a couple minutes, Ariana! Just to check in on what you’ve missed!”
The Lord convicted me right then and there, and I sat down and wrote a list of things to remember when temptation hits.
- TEMPTATION IS NOT FROM GOD. This one is so important, because the Devil can use this lie to deceive you about who God is and just how much He loves us. In James 1:13-18, it says that “When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.” Your temptation is a reflection of your flesh and it’s desires.
- GOD NEVER LETS YOU HANDLE WHAT YOU CAN’T…WELL, HANDLE. Listen, God knows your strengths and weaknesses better than you know your strengths and weaknesses. So if there is a temptation that is just so overwhelming that you feel like you can’t take it, take heart! God knows your stronger than you think, and that’s the highest compliment of all. Hold your head high and stand your ground, sister. 1 Corinthians 10:3 “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
- PRAYER IS SO POWERFUL AGAINST TEMPTATION. When you pray to God to help you stay strong, you’re declaring victory against the enemy. You’re admitting to God that without Him, you are weak, but with Him, you are strong, and in turn, He gives you the weapons needed to fight SIN! Luke 22:40 “On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.”
PS. Remember, honey is sweet 😉
PPS. I think it’s important to mention that I did not break my fast and I’m still going strong!!!
